Is a marketing agency worth it under £10M revenue?

Short answer

Yes, when the agency solves a problem you cannot solve yourself and you can measure the result. In the UK, Whito's 2026 research puts typical agency retainers at £1,500 to £3,000 a month for businesses with £500k to £2m turnover, and £2,500 to £5,000 a month at £2m to £5m. An agency is not worth it yet if your customer, message or ownership of marketing is unclear. Fix those first.

When an agency is worth the money.

  • You have a product that sells, and growth has levelled off.
  • You know who your best customers are, but you cannot reach more of them.
  • The founder has become the marketing bottleneck.
  • You need several skills at once (strategy, creative, content, ads) and cannot hire them all.
  • You can name the result you want, such as leads, sales or sign-ups.

When to wait.

  • You cannot describe your best customer in two sentences.
  • Nobody inside the company will own the work and approve decisions.
  • You are still testing whether the product sells at all.
  • You expect an agency to find your strategy without your input.

How to judge it in 90 days.

Agree three measures before you start: the result you want, the date you expect to see it, and who will report it. Ask for a monthly summary in plain English. After 90 days, you should be able to say what was done, what it cost and what changed.

Common questions

What does a marketing agency cost for a small business in the UK?

According to Whito's 2026 research, typical retainers are £1,500 to £3,000 a month at £500k to £2m turnover, and £2,500 to £5,000 a month at £2m to £5m. Single-channel services start around £1,250 a month; full-service retainers run from £3,500 to £16,750 a month.

Is a freelancer better than an agency?

A freelancer is often right for one clear task, such as content or ads. An agency or subscription service is better when you need strategy, creative and campaigns to work together.

Should a company under £500k revenue hire an agency?

Usually not a full agency. At this stage a clear customer and message matter more. A diagnostic, a freelancer or an AI-led service can give direction at lower cost.
